Proton pump inhibitors





Introduction

Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) cause irreversible blockade of H+/K+ ATPase of the gastric parietal cell.

Examples include omeprazole and lansoprazole.

Adverse effects

  • Hyponatraemia
  • Osteoporosis → increased risk of fractures
  • Microscopic colitis
  • Increased risk of Clostridium difficile infections
